Baltimore, Md.—Red-hot UMBC women's basketball, winners of their last three games, heads to Vermont for a Saturday afternoon meeting with the Catamounts. UMBC sits at 16-10, 7-6 AE on the year.
Scouting the Retrievers:
-UMBC kept the momentum going, holding off a pesky Hartford squad, 58-51 on Wednesday for their third straight victory. Junior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) led the team in scoring with 19 points, while classmates Amanda Hagaman (Manasquan, N.J./Manasquan) and Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) added 12 each.
-The Retrievers lead the America East and rank 24th in Division I in turnover margin (+4.42) and 43rd in turnovers per game (18.9). McCarley ranks 13th in DI in free throw attempts (181), 14th in free throws made (132) and 28th in assists (137).
-McCarley (14.3 ppg) and Pandora Wilson (13.7 ppg) rank 9 and 10, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in a team-best 7.1 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 5.3 assists and 2.6 steals.
Scouting the Catamounts:
-Vermont enters the contest at 7-19, 2-11 AE on the year, having lost their last six contests. Most recently, the Catamounts dropped a 66-52 decision at Binghamton last Tuesday.
-Sydney Smith leads the Catamounts as the lone double figure scorer on the team at 10.2 points per game. Smith also leads the team with 5.2 rebounds per game, having played and started in every game this year. As a team, Vermont is scoring 56.4 points per game, while opponents are averaging 64.1 per game.
All-Time Series:
-Vermont holds a slim 14-13 lead in the all-time series, with the Retrievers taking the most recent matchup in early January. UMBC won 85-48, forcing nearly 30 Catamount turnovers in the contest.
-UMBC has won the last four meetings, but Vermont has an 8-4 record in game played in Burlington.
