Retrievers Fall Twice to Conclude GCU Kickoff Tournament

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ – The UMBC Softball team completed their opening weekend of the 2016 season by falling twice on Saturday morning in the GCU Kickoff Tournament at Grand Canyon University.

 Game 1
Junior Kelly Lane (Albany, N.Y./ Colonie Central) got the start in the circle and immediately worked out of a bases loaded, no-out jam to keep the game scoreless. Neither team broke through until the third when Loyola Marymount (3-0) would strike for six runs on five hits. The Retrievers (0-4) would get one back in the fifth when sophomore Toni Santonastasso (Galena, Ohio/Pope John XXIII Regional) would get a two-out pinch-hit single, and her pinch runner, freshman Shayna Rider (Westminster, MD/Delone Catholic)  would score on an error by the center fielder off a hit by sophomore Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior).

Freshman Chelsie Delperuto (Syracuse, N.Y./Solvay) would pick up her first career hit in the seventh and was driven in on a two-out RBI single off the bat of Alexander. Lane pitched all six innings, allowing seven runs (six earned) on 11 hits, while striking out three and walking four.

Game 2

In the afternoon game, Grand Canyon would score three runs in each of the first three innings off of junior pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee). UMBC only managed four hits in the game, all singles. Lane was the lone Retriever to reach base multiple times, going 1-for-1 with a single and a walk. Holte (0-2) was replaced by junior Nicole Casagrand (Melbourne, Fla/Hatboro-Horsham), who shut down the Antelopes with a perfect fourth inning to keep the score 9-0.

UMBC returns to action on Friday, February 19 at the Alabama State Black & Gold Tournament. The Retrievers will face Middle Tennessee State at 5 p.m., followed by a matchup with the host Hornets at 7 p.m.
