Softball Drops Two in Arizona to Open Season

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

Phoenix, AZ – Junior first baseman Carly Lesko (New Milford, NJ./New Milford) went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBI in game one, but the UMBC Softball team couldn't complete the comeback as they dropped a 10-6 decision to Loyola Marymount in the GCU Kickoff Tournament at Stapleton-Pierson Stadium on the campus of Grand Canyon University on Friday morning.

In the second game, the Retrievers were no-hit by the host Antelopes in an 18-0, five-inning loss.

Game 1

Loyola Marymount (1-0) jumped out to a five-run lead in the top of the first, but the Retrievers (0-2) would answer.  Sophomore centerfielder Tori Alexander (Woodbridge, Va./Woodbridge Senior) walked and stole second, followed by Morgan Peyou (Mercer Island, Wash./Mercer Island) walking in her first collegiate plate appearance. Junior third baseman Kaelin Jackson (Export, Pa./Franklin Regional) then drove them both in with a triple to cut the deficit to 5-2 after an inning of play.
After a scoreless second inning,  each team would add a run in the third, with UMBC's coming on a Lesko solo shot. The Lions would stretch their lead to 10-3 before Lesko hit her second homer of the game, this one of the three-run variety, with one out in the seventh to account for the final score.
Junior pitcher Jessica Holte (Ashland, Va./Atlee) went the distance, allowing 10 runs and 16 hits while striking out five and walking three.

Game 2

The second game of the day followed a similar script to the first, as Grand Canyon (1-0) put up nine in the first inning knocking sophomore Kim Puccio (Sparta, N.J./Sparta) out of the game after a third of an inning and handing her the loss.

Junior Nicole Casagrand took over on the mound and went 3.2 innings, giving up nine runs (eight earned)  while striking out two and walking none. UMBC had four batters reach base, one via error and the other three were by hit by pitch.

UMBC returns to action tomorrow morning with an 11 a.m. rematch with Loyola Marymount, followed immediately by a game against Grand Canyon.
