Swimming and Diving Hosts Old Dominion on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC swimming and diving hosts Old Dominion at the UMBC Aquatic Complex this Saturday afternoon. The Retrievers are coming off a weekend where the swimmers defeated Gardner-Webb, and the divers had a good showing against Delaware last weekend.

Last Time Out (Swim-Gardner-Webb, Dive-Delaware):

On the men's side, the Retrievers won both relays contested, starting the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan, Philip Adejumo and Ahmed Wahby touched in with a time of 1:34.23. UMBC bookended the meet with a win the 400 free relay as Ilia Rattsev, Jared Vance, Connor Ganley and Gregor Spoerlein finished in 3:05.34.

Individually, both Adejumo and Rattsev won two races each. Adejumo won both the 100 and 200 fly with times of 49.86 and 1:52.69. Rattsev was a winner in the 100 and 200 free, touching in with times of 45.73 and 1:40.40.

Freshman Haythem Abdelkhalek was a double winner, sweeping the distance free events. In the 1,000 free, Abdelkhalek finished with a time of 9:36.11 and also took first in the 500 free with a time of 4:37.43.

Other Retriever individual winners included Galvan (100 breast, 58.22), Spoerlein (50 free, 21.17), Gliese (200 back, 1:49.94), Kyle Paxton (200 breast, 2:07.32) and Nikola Trajkovic (200 IM, 1:53.43).

The UMBC women were led once again by Emily Escobedo and Hania Moro, who each won three events and were a part of a winning relay. Escobedo won both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:02.87 and 2:12.57. The senior also took first in the 200 IM in a time of 2:04.57. Escobedo swam the second leg of the winning 200 medley relay, joining Lauren Day, Amanda Day and Emily Vance with a time of 1:45.73.

Moro took first in the 1,000 free and 500 free with times of 10:27.76 and 5:03.08. She completed her trifecta with a win in the 200 free, finishing in a time of 1:53.25.

The Egypt native swam the anchor leg in the 400 free relay with Megan Allison, Alissa Caulfield and Haylee Committe, who finished in a time of 3:34.38.

Other Retriever winners included Kylie Danin in the 100 back (57.59) and Aleasha Knight in the 200 back (2:03.93).

Conference Honors All Around:

Six different Retrievers have earned conference swimmer of diver of the week awards thus far in the 2016-17 season. The men have seen Ahmed Wahby (Maadi, Egypt), Gregor Spoerlein (Bamberg, Germany), and Haythem Abdelkhalek (Ariana, Tunisia) earn CCSA Swimmer of the Week once with Elijah Wright (Baltimore, Md./Loyola Blakefield) being named Diver of the Week twice.

Emily Escobedo (New Rochelle, N.Y./Maria Regina) has been named America East Swimmer of the Week three times this year, with Abby Biddulph (Egg Harbor City, N.J./Absegami) earning Diver of the Week this past week.

Up Next: 

The Retrievers will close out the fall semester at the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason. The three day meet will run from Thursday, Nov. 17 through Saturday, Nov. 19 with prelims at 10 a.m. and finals at 6 p.m. each day.
