Princess Anne, Md.  –Senior forward Will Darley (Dulaney) scored 24 points and junior guard Jairus Lyles (DeMatha) added 23, as visiting UMBC held off Maryland, Eastern Shore (0-2), 77-73 at Hytche Arena.

Under new head coach Ryan Odom, the Retrievers are off to their first 2-0 start since the 2007-08 campaign.

Darley knocked down 5-of-6 shots from 3-point range, and added  seven rebounds. Lyles added six caroms, a team-best six assists and three steals.

Lyles scored the first five points of the second half to give the Retrievers a 40-31 lead, but the Hawks responded with a 9-3 run to make it a one-possession game. Darley hit back-to-back threes to re-engerize the visitors and UMBC built the lead to a game-high 11 points at 62-51 on junior guard Jourdan Grant's (Archbishop Spalding) fast-break layup with eight minutes remaining.

The Hawks kept contact, but could never make it a one-possession game. They trimmed the deficit ot 72-68 on a Tyler Jones' layup with 50 seconds remaining, and the hosts called time out to set up a press. But UMBC handled the pressure and junior guard K.J. Maura hit one of two free throws with 34 seconds remaining.

Aftera Hawk miss, Grant knocked down two free throws with 19 seconds left to put the Retrievers up, 75-68, and secure the road victory.

Darley, who scored 23 points in a victory over the Hawks a year ago, has converted 31 treys (of 55, 56.4%) in his last eight games dating back to last season.

The Shore outshot UMBC, 46.8 percent to 36.7 percent from the floor, but the Retrievers outscored their hosts, 25-6, from the charity stripe. The Retrievers outrebounded the Hawks, 41-39, and only committed nine turnovers.

Freshman forward Arkel Lamar led UMBC with eight caroms.  

UMBC started brightly, hitting 7 of its first 11 shots from the floor, the host Hawks stayed in touch, trailing just 18-17 after Sherburne hitting a driving layup with 13:05 to play in the first half. But the Retrievers misfired on ten consecutive field goal attempts, going scoreless for 4:45 until Darley buried his third trey of the half at the 6:20 mark.

UMES freshman Tyler Jones tied the score at 26-all with 3:55 to play in the stanza. But the visitors paraded to the free throw line in the final 4:19 of the half, converting 9-fo-10 and building a 35-28 lead on a Lyles' steal and bucket with eight seconds remaining.

But Jones, who scored 15 first half points, banked in a 28-footer just before the buzzer to cut the Hawks' deficit to 35-31.

The Retrievers hosts Delaware State on Wed., Nov. 16 at 7:00 p.m.
