UMBC Game Notes
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball jumps on the road when the Retrievers travel to Maine to take on the Black Bears in a noon matchup on Saturday, Jan. 9 at the Cross Insurance Center.
Scouting the Retrievers (10-5, 1-1 AE):
-UMBC looks to bounce back from a 77-42 loss to Albany on Wednesday. The Retrievers made their first six shots of the second half, but were unable to close the deficit to single digits. Juniors Pandora Wilson and Taylor McCarley each tallied nine points in the contest.
-UMBC has won of its last 10 games coming into the weekend en route to receiving votes in the CollegeInsider.com Mid-Major Top-25. The Retrievers lead the America East and rank 12th in Division I in turnover margin (+5.67) and 31st in turnovers per game (20.6). McCarley ranks ninth in DI in free throw attempts (109), 13th in free throws made (76) and 34th in assists (75).
-McCarley (12.1 ppg) and Pandora Wilson (11.7 ppg) rank 12 and 13, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in a team-best 6.9 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 5.0 assists and 2.0 steals. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo is shooting 34.2 percent from beyond the arc for 1.7 three-point field goals per game.
Scouting the Black Bears (10-6, 1-0 AE):
-Maine returns home, where the Black Bears have been a perfect 4-0 on the season, for the first time in three games. Maine is coming off a 62-41 win against Vermont on Wednesday, behind three double-digit scorers. Guard Sigi Koizar registered her seventh game with 20-points or more to lead the Black Bears to victory.
-Koizar marks the only Maine player averaging in double-figures on the season, ranking fourth in the league at 17.4 points per game. Koizar is seventh in the league in field goal percentage (48.8) and first in three-point field goal percentage (44.0), averaging 2.3 threes per game. Senior Liz Wood is pulling down 7.4 rebounds per game to go with her 9.0 points, 2.7 assists and 2.6 steals.
On the Horizon for the Retrievers
-UMBC returns home for its annual Midday Madness contest on Wednesday, Jan. 13 when the Retrievers take on Stony Brook in a nationally televised noon matchup at the RAC Arena.
Inside the Series
-Maine has won four in a row to take a 13-11 lead in the all-time series. The Black Bears have won seven off 11 meetings on their home floor against the Retrievers.
