UMBC Game Notes
Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball looks to get their second straight win when they travel to Hartford on Thursday night. The Retrievers are coming off a 68-44 win at UMass Lowell, where three Retrievers reached double figures, led by senior Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) with 22. Scouting the Retrievers (11-7, 2-3 AE):
-UMBC stopped the losing streak with a 68-44 victory at UMass Lowell on Saturday. The Retrievers had three score in double figures, led by senior Capree Garner's 22 points. Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) and Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) added 17 and 14 each, with McCarley chipping in eight assists and eight steals.
-The Retrievers lead the America East and rank 8th in Division I in turnover margin (+6.22) and 18th in turnovers per game (20.7). McCarley ranks 10th in DI in free throw attempts (130), 14th in free throws made (92) and 40th in assists (92).
-Wilson (12.6 ppg) and McCarley (12.2 ppg) rank 10 and 12, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in team-best 6.9 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 5.1 assists and 2.7 steals. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y./Clarkstown South) is shooting 31.9 percent from beyond the arc for 1.6 three-point field goals per game.
Scouting the Hawks (6-11, 2-2 AE):
-Hartford enters the Thursday matchup after being handed a 58-35 loss to Stony Brook on Monday. The Hawks shot just 23.5% from the field as Darby Lee led the team with 14 points on 6-17 shooting.
-Deanna Mayza leads the team, averaging 11.7 points per game, while adding in 3.3 rebounds and 4.0 assists. Lee is the only other Hawks above seven ppg, scoring at a 7.5 clip, grabbing 2.3 caroms in 21.8 minutes for Hartford.
Inside the Series:
-Hartford leads the all-time series 21-6, including an 11-1 lead in games played in West Hartford. UMBC split the season series last year, with each team winning at home.
-The Retrievers held the Hawks to just one basket over the final 8:38 of the first half en route to a 53-51 victory last February. UMBC got a game high 16 points from Capree Garner, as well as ten points from Liz McNaughton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) in the win.
