UMBC Women's Basketball Heads to UMass Lowell on Saturday

Baltimore, Md.—UMBC women's basketball heads back on the road for a Saturday matinee against UMass Lowell on Saturday, Jan. 16. The Retrievers are coming off a 69-60 overtime loss to Stony Brook on Wednesday. Scouting the Retrievers (10-7, 1-3 AE):

-UMBC has dropped their previous three contests, including a 69-60 loss to Stony Brook on Wednesday afternoon. The Retrievers got a career day from junior Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross), who had 26 points on 11-19 shooting adding four blocks, all of which were career highs.

-The Retrievers lead the America East and rank 15th in Division I in turnover margin (+5.18) and 32nd in turnovers per game (19.9). Junior Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) ranks ninth in DI in free throw attempts (123), 13th in free throws made (87) and 40th in assists (84).

-Wilson (12.5 ppg) and McCarley (11.9 ppg) rank 11 and 13, respectively, in the America East in scoring. Wilson is chipping in a team-best 7.1 rebounds per contest, while McCarley is adding 4.9 assists and 2.4 steals. Sophomore guard Laura Castaldo is shooting 33.7 percent from beyond the arc for 1.7 three-point field goals per game. 

Scouting the River Hawks (3-12, 0-3 AE):

-UMass Lowell heads into the Saturday matchup with the Retrievers at 3-12, 0-3 AE on the year. Most recently, the River Hawks dropped a 74-44 decision to Maine on Wednesday. The Black Bears shot 47% from the field, forcing 22 turnovers in the win.

-The River Hawks are led by Lindsey Doucette who is averaging 14.3 points per game and 9.3 rebounds per game, both team bests. The 9.3 rpg is good for second best in the conference behind Shereesha Richards of UAlbany. Kayla Gibbs and Nicole Hayner are averaging double figures at 12.8 and 10.7 ppg respectively.

Inside the Series:

-The River Hawks have won all four matchups between the two sides since UMass Lowell joined the America East two years ago.

-The most recent meeting went 84-78 in favor of UMass Lowell in Baltimore on February 4. Senior Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) led the Retriever offense with a game high 31 points on 9-18 shooting. Both teams shot over 50%, but the River Hawk bench outscored UMBC 32-6.
