McCarley Scores Career-High 29, Sets School FT Mark as Retrievers Roll Past UNH

Baltimore, Md.- UMBC sophomore guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) scored a career-high 29 points and set a school record by making 17 free throws as the Retrievers rallied in the second half for a 69-55 victory over New Hampshire in an America East game on Saturday at the RAC Arena.

McCarley, who also added 10 rebounds to complete a double-double, scored 20 of her points in the second half as UMBC (8-15, 3-7) dominated. She went 17-for-21 from the free throw line to break the record of 16 set by Katie Brooks on Nov. 21, 2008 versus Northern Illinois

New Hampshire held a 28-27 halftime lead, but the Retrievers used several second-half runs to take command. The Retrievers went on an 8-0 run for a 39-36 lead and later added streaks of 6-0 and 7-2 to take over.

UMBC junior guard Capree Garner (Silver Spring, Md./Springbrook) pitched with in 14 points, seven rebounds and five steals. Garner also stepped up in when McCarley picked up her fourth foul and went out for about four minutes later in the second half, scoring five key points as the Retrievers held on.

Freshman guard Laura Castaldo (West Nyack, N.Y., Clarkstown South) added 13 points, hitting six of 10 from the field. Castaldo, Garner and McCarley combined for 56 points, outscoring the whole New Hampshire team.

Free throws and steals also were big for UMBC in this game. The Retrievers made 24 of 32 from the line (75 percent) and made 14 steals while forcing 20 turnovers from New Hampshire (14-9, 6-5). UMBC scored 14 points off of those turnovers.

Elizabeth Belanger led the Wildcats with 11 points while Kaylee Kirkpatrick, Ariel Gaston and Kristen Anderson all added 10. New Hampshire now has dropped four straight.
The Retrievers return to action at Stony Brook on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
