UMBC Women's Basketball Falls to Saint Joseph's, 104-45

PHILADELPHIA  - UMBC women's basketball dropped the opening game of the Hawk Classic, falling 104-45 to host Saint Joseph's in non-conference action on Monday afternoon at Michael J. Hagan '85 Arena.

The Hawks hit 56.1 percent from the field, including 52 percent (13-for-25) from three, while the Retrievers hit 28.8 percent of their shots. SJU had five players finish with double-digit points, led by 15 points from junior guard Kathleen Fitzpatrick. Sophomore guard SChelsea Woods added the game's only double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds. UMBC was paced by junior guard Taylor McCarley's (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) eight points and four assists.  

UMBC snaps its six-game win streak to fall to 8-4 on the season, while Saint Joseph's (5-6) wins its third game in the last five chances.

It was all Saint Joseph's in the opening quarter as the Hawks shot 70.6 percent from the field, including six-of-seven from long range. The Retrievers, who ranked 26th in Division I in scoring defense coming into the contest, surrendered their highest point total in a quarter all season, allowing 38 points in the opening 10 minutes of play for a 38-9 lead.

SJU forced the Retrievers into 12 first-half turnovers which converted into 23 Hawk points. Saint Joseph's finished the first half with nine three-point field goals (9-for-15). Freshman guard Alyssa Monaghan and Fitzpatrick combined to hit 7-of-11 shots from long range in the first two quarters for a combined 21 points.

The Hawks crashed the offensive boards in the second half, pulling down 12 offensive rebounds en route to 21 second chance points.

UMBC plays the loser of Central Michigan and Rider at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 29 for day two of the Hawk Classic.
