UMBC Game Notes
BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball jumps back into action with a noon contest at cross-town rival Coppin State on Thursday, Nov. 19 at the Physical Education Complex Arena.
Scouting the Retrievers (0-2):
-UMBC dropped both of its game in the opening weekend of the season, falling to Columbia, 70-68, in overtime in the season opener and following with an 81-46 loss to Penn on Sunday evening.
-Juniors Taylor McCarley and Pandora Wilson pace the Retrievers' offense that has posted 57.0 points per game through the first two contests. McCarley and Wilson have each contributed 10.5 points per contest, with McCarley chipping in a team-best 3.5 assists and Wilson added 7.5 rebounds per game.
-Junior transfer Chukwuma Chiamaka is contributing 8.5 points and a team-best 9.0 rebounds per game off the bench. The wing has pulled down 11 offensive rebounds in the Retrievers' two contests and has shot 40 percent from the floor (8-for-20).
-The Retrievers' have had some shooting struggles early on, knocking down 32.6 percent of its shots from the field, including 25.8 percent from long range, and have hit just 51.6 percent from the free throw line.
-UMBC returns nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that returned to the league semifinals for the first time since 2012 and their fourth time since joining the league. UMBC finished with a 12-19 overall record and a 6-10 mark in America East action for a seventh-place finish in the league standings and were predicted by league coaches to finish sixth in the annual preseason poll.
Scouting the Eagles (0-2):
-Coppin State has also dropped its first two contests of the season, falling to VCU in the opener, 73-42, and following with a 96-64 loss to West Virginia on Monday. The Eagles return home for the first time this season, where they posted a 4-8 mark last season.
-CSU has three players averaging in double-digits after two games led by junior guard Keena Samuels' 12.0 points per game. Senior forward Janelle Lane and senior guard Jordan Swails are each shooting above 44 percent from the field for 11.0 and 10.5 points per game, respectively. Senior forward Omaah Tayong has cleaned up the boards for the Eagles, pulling down a team-best 7.0 rebound per game.
-Coppin State returned six letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that posted a 7-22 overall record. CSU finished with a 5-11 mark in MEAC action for a 10th-place finish.
On the Horizon for the Retrievers
-UMBC returns home on Saturday, Nov. 21 when the Retrievers host Rider in 1 p.m. matchup at the RAC Arena.
Inside the Series
-UMBC leads the all-time series, 13-11, after last season's 78-65 victory at the RAC Arena.
-The home team has won in each of the last eight matchups between the two squads.
