UMBC Women's Basketball Falls to Penn, 81-46

BALTIMORE – UMBC women's basketball was unable to overcome turning the ball over 13 times, which led to 21 Penn points, as the Retrievers fell in non-conference action, 81-46, to the Quakers on Sunday evening at the RAC Arena.

Penn (1-1) shot 47 percent from the floor and drained nine threes en route to the victory, while the Retrievers (0-2) shot 30.8 percent for the floor and 28.6 percent from the free throw line.

UMBC was led by seven points and six rebounds from junior forward Pandora Wilson (Gaithersburg, Md./Academy of Holy Cross). Penn's Michelle Nwokedi recorded a double-double with a game-high 23 points and 11 rebounds.

The Retrievers looked good out of the gate as junior guard Taylor McCarley (Bowie, Md./Academy of Holy Cross) scored the first five points of the contest and followed up with an assist to help the Retrievers open a 7-4 lead with less than seven minutes to go in the opening quarter. Penn responded with back-to-back buckets to take its first lead of the contest at 8-7.

Penn was able to open up a seven-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, with the Retrievers shooting 28.6 percent in the opening 10 minutes of play. UMBC would pull within five, 22-17, following a Liz McNaugton (Fairfax, Va./Fairfax) three-pointer, but Penn used a 13-0 run to extend its advantage to 35-17, with 3:59 to go before the break.

Penn took a 39-21 advantage into hafltime after shooting 48.5 percent from the field and 38.5 percent from long range. The Retrievers did not help their cause, turning the ball over seven times, leading to 13 Quaker points, while Penn turned the ball over twice.

The Quakers increased their lead in the third, outscoring the Retrievers, 20-8, in the period, with Nwokedi registering seven of her game-high 23 points in the stanza. Penn went on to shoot a game-best 56.3 percent in the fourth en route to the victory.  

On the Horizon for the Retrievers

-UMBC returns to action on Thursday, Nov. 19 when the Retrievers travel to cross-town rival Coppin State for a noon matchup.    

Game Notes

-Both teams pulled down 15 offensive rebounds, with Penn registered 14 second chance points to UMBC's 12.
-Both teams did damage in the paint, with Penn holding 38-30 advantage at points in the paint.
-Rookies Gracie Doane and Michaela Gelabugh each saw their UMBC debuts in the contest.
