Scouting the Retrievers (0-1):

-UMBC dropped its season-opener, 70-68, to Columbia on Friday. Red-shirt junior Megan Roxas helped the Retrievers to force overtime by knocking down a game-tying trey with 11 seconds remaining in regulation, but UMBC was unable to come away with the victory.

-The Retrievers shot 34.2 percent against Columbia, including 28.6 percent from long range. UMBC, who shot 66.2 percent from the free throw line last season, only hit 58.3 percent from the charity stripe on Friday. The bright spot for the Retrievers were their 18 offensive rebounds.

-Newcomers Stixz Wilson and Chukwuma Chiamaka had outstanding UMBC debuts. Wilson knocked down five-of-10 shots for 10 points, including four points in overtime, while also adding three steals. Chiamaka recorded the game's only double-double, knocking down 11 points and pulling down 12 rebounds, including seven offensive rebounds.

-Junior guard Taylor McCarley paced the Retrievers with 16 points, seven rebounds, three assists and two steals against the Lions. Classmate Pandora Wilson added 14 points and nine rebounds off the bench.

-UMBC returns nine letterwinners and four starters from last year's squad that returned to the league semifinals for the first time since 2012 and their fourth time since joining the league. UMBC finished with a 12-19 overall record and a 6-10 mark in America East action for a seventh-place finish in the league standings and were predicted by league coaches to finish sixth in the annual preseason poll.

Scouting the Quakers:

-Penn put up a fight against No. 14/12 Duke on Friday night, falling to the Blue Devils, 57-50. Lauren Whitlatch recorded 18 points, with all six of her field goals coming from beyond the arc, while Michelle Nwokedi chipped in 15 points, eight rebounds and two blocks.

-The Quakers return nine letterwinners and three starters from last year's squad that place second in the Ivy League and earned a spot in the WNIT. Penn was picked to finish in second place in the league's annual preseason poll and earned one first-place vote.
