UMBC Swimming and Diving Has Strong Showing Against Bucknell

Lewisburg, Pa.—The UMBC swimming and diving teams opened the 2015-16 season with an exhibition meet against the Bison on Saturday. Several Retrievers earned first place finishes in the non-scored meet.

For the women, the Retrievers won both relays of the day, in the 200 medley and 400 free relays. The quartet of Lauren Day, Emily Escobedo, Amanda Day, and Kristie Langford took first in the 200 medley with a time of 1:45.97. The 400 free relay team of Hania Moro, Laura Massicotte, Catherine Frediani and Allison Atkinson touched the wall in 3:33.53.

Individually, Moro led things off with a win in 1000 free, out-touching teammate Laura Massicotte by six seconds. Kayla Lilly took gold in the 400 IM with a time of 4:34.17. Freshman Maddy Popalis picked up her first collegiate win in the 200 breast in a time of 2:28.21. Moro would sweep the distance events, winning the 500 free in just over five minutes.

Other Retriever victors were Lilly (200 IM), Popalis (100 breast, 50 breast), Moro (200 free) and Amanda Day (50 fly). On the boards, Coco Darelius swept both diving disciplines, scoring 258.23 on the 1 meter and 245.78 on the 3 meter boards.

The men kicked off the year with a win in the 200 medley relay. Nikola Trajkovic, Leo Endres, Philip Adejumo and Gregor Spoerlein touched the wall in 1:33.60 for the win.

Rookie Felix Reichsfield was a winner in the 1000 free, clocking in at 9:39.72. Andrew McKissick also picked up a win in the 200 fly, touching in at 1:54.60.

Other Retriever winners were Luca Santinelli (200 breast), Spoerlein (200 free, 100 free, 50 free), Reichsfield (500 free), Trajkovic (200 IM, 100 IM) Adejumo (100 fly, 50 fly), Alexander Gilese (100 back, 50 back), Endres (100 breast), and Leo Mercer (50 breast).

The Retrievers are back in the pool next Saturday, October 10 at Rider.
