Retriever Women Down Rider; Men Fall on Saturday

Lawrenceville, N.J.—UMBC swimming and diving took on the Rider Broncs on Saturday in the first scored meet of the year. The Retriever women took first in every race, while the men won a majority of the races.

"The women's team was exceptional today. They had some really outstanding swims," Head Coach Chad Cradock said of his team. "Our men took the meet to the last relay. Things did not go the way we would have liked, but we learned a lot from the outcome." 

The women started off the meet with a win in the 200 medley relay. Lauren Day, Amanda Day, Emily Escobedo and Kristie Langford won with a time of 1:47.14. Langford would team up with Laura Massicotte, Catherine Frediani, and Hania Moro to win the final relay of the day, 400 free relay, in a time of 3:35.27.

The Retrievers won every race, highlighted by multiple wins for Langford, Escobedo and Moro. Langford wont the 50 free (24.82) and 100 free (53.94) while Escobedo won the 100 breast (1:03.54), 200 breast (2:14.45) and 200 IM (2:06.75). Moro was a winner in the 200 free (1:53.37) and 500 free (5:04.47).

Coco Darelius had another strong day on the boards, sweeping both disciplines. Darelius won the 1 meter dive with a score of 245.48 and the 3 meter dive with a score of 252.90.

The men had a strong showing again this week, including Philip Adejumo, who set a Coppola Pool record in the 100 fly. Adejumo took first with a time of 49.97. Freshman Alexander Gliese led the Retrievers with a pair of wins in the 100 back (51.00) and 200 back (1:50.88).

Other Retriever winners included Felix Richtfeld (1,000 free; 9:42.28)Gregor Spoerlein (100 free; 46.62) and Nikola Trajkovic (200 IM; 1:55.96).

The Retrievers will return to Baltimore for a meet against local rival Navy on Friday, Oct. 16. The meet will kick off at 4:00 p.m.
