Reese Sends UMBC Women's Lacrosse to Dramatic 11-10 Second Overtime Win over American

Box Score

BALTIMORE – UMBC freshman attack Mackenzie Reese (Bel Air, Md./John Carroll) scored off a feed from sophomore Rachel Benzing (Ellicott City, Md./Centennial) with 13 seconds remaining in the second overtime period to give the Retrievers women's lacrosse team a thrilling 11-10 win over American, Saturday evening at UMBC Stadium.

The goal was the second of the night for Reese while junior Alyssa Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State) paced the UMBC (1-2) attack with a hat-trick.  Semones also dished out an assist as seven different Retrievers hit the back of the net in the win.

Olivia Mangan and Emily Maher each scored three goals for American (1-2), with all three of Maher's goals coming in the second half.

UMBC jumped out to an early lead as sophomore Sam Nolan (Fallston, Md./Fallston) dented the net just over two minutes into the game.  Senior Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va./Loudon Valley/Florida) and red-shirt junior Ali Carpenter (Baltimore, Md./McDonogh/Loyola (Md.)) then scored within 19 second of each other to put the Black and Gold up 3-0 just 3:38 into the game.

America answered back with a solo effort from Jessica Wojciechowski, but Semones restored the UMBC lead to three, 4-1, by scoring off a pass from junior Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston).

The teams then stalemated for the next 12 minutes as red-shirt sophomore goalie Anna Barnett (Midland, Texas/Midland) made a fantastic stick save on an Eagles' free-position shot at the 16:14 mark.

Semones added to her tally with 8:00 remaining in the half, taking a feed from Nolan and finding the back of the net.  American pushed back before the end of the period, however, drawing within one, 5-4, on two goals from Mangan and one from Wojciechowski.

UMBC came out of the gate strong once again to start the second half as Benzing scored less than 90 seconds into the frame on an assist from Nolan to push the lead back to two, 6-4.  Off of the ensuing draw, Semones dished to Reese who put the ball away for a three-goal Retriever lead, 7-4.

The Eagles would not go away and once again drew within one, as Wojciechowski and Jamie Silverman scored just 37 second apart to trim the UMBC lead to 7-6.  The Retrievers responded with two goals of their own as Wilson scored her second of the game on a solo effort at 13:18 and Semones matched her with an unassisted goal at 12:30.

Fueled by Maher's three straight goals, American knotted the game at 9-9 with 8:04 to play before Mangan then sent the Eagles in front with an unassisted goal with just 4:00 remaining.

The lead did not last long, though, as Wilson scored just 49 second later to level things at 10-10.

UMBC won the draw, but could not break the dead lock as American net-minder Ashley Dalisera came up with a save with seven second left in regulation.

In the first overtime, freshman goalie Kelly Gielner (Pasadena, Md./St. Mary's) stuffed Mangan after American held the ball for a minute and a half.  The Retrievers broke out quickly, but Reese's last-second shot went wide.

The Retrievers won control in the second extra-time frame, but could not close it out.

Gielner, who earns her first career win after recording two saves, came up big once again in the final period, stopping a shot from Alex Lugovina.  Semones picked up the ground ball and sent the Retrievers on their way where Reese fired home after a pass from behind the cage from Benzing.

UMBC now has a week off before traveling up to Philadelphia to take on LaSalle on Saturday, March 1.  The Retrievers and Explorers are scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. first draw.
