Roseboro Nets Career-Best 20 Points, But UMBC Falls at Stony Brook

Box Score

Stony Brook, N.Y.- UMBC senior post Brett Roseboro (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) scored a career-high 20 points, but host Stony Brook outshot the Retrievers, 72-53, at Pritchard Gym.

The second-place Seawolves improved to 19-8 overall and 11-2 in America East play, while UMBC slipped to 9-18, 5-9.

Roseboro hit 8-of-15 shots from the floor, added a team-best nine rebounds and recorded UMBC's lone two rejections of the game.

The Retrievers got off to an excellent start, frustrating the Seawolves with a 1-3-1 defense. Roseboro scored five points as UMBC got out to an 8-0 lead at the 15:50 mark. But Stony Brook countered with a 14-4 run and took its first lead on a dunk by Eric McAlister near the midpoint of the stanza. After hitting seven of its first 13 field goal attempts, the Retrievers struggled down the stretch of the half, misfiring on nine of its last eleven. UMBC was whistled for 13 first half fouls and the Seawolves paraded to the free throw line, hitting 15-of-18 and built a 35-23 advantage.

UMBC stayed within striking distance until the midpoint of the second half. Retriever freshman guard Rodney Elliott (Baltimore, Md./John Carroll) hit his lone trey of the contest to pull the visitors to within 52-40 with 11:27 remaining. UMBC had a possession to trim the deficit further, but could not convert and Seawolves started a 9-0 run to grab a game-high 21-point advantage at 61-40 with six minutes remaining.

Stony Brook sophomore post Jameel Warney led the hosts with 18 points.

UMBC plays its final home game of the campaign on Saturday, when they host Binghamton at 7:00 p.m. Seniors Quentin Jones (Baltimore, Md./Mt. St. Joseph), Chase Plummer (Plainfield, N.J./St. Patrick) and Roseboro will be honored in pre-game ceremonies.

Notes: Elliott scored nine points and his 393 points on the season is now third on UMBC's all-time scoring list for freshmen at the Division I level… Jones recorded a career-high five steals.
