Box Score

Baltimore, Md.—The UMBC volleyball team fell 3-0 to Stony Brook on Friday night. Junior Krystal Mlemchukwu (Baltimore, Md./Western Tech), sophomore Ivana Kostic (Belgrade, Serbia/Srednja Skola Grocka) and junior Sherelle Walker (New Freedom, Pa./Susquehannock) each had six kills to pace the Retrievers. UMBC falls to 10-12, 4-5 AE with the loss.

The opening stanza saw the Seawolves (15-11, 5-3 AE) jumped ahead to a 6-2 lead, thanks in large part to a 4-0 run. The Retrievers would rally, fighting their way back into the set at 15-12 after a couple of Mlemchukwu kills. Stony Brook would push out further; going on a 5-1 run that gave them a 21-15 lead. They would finish off the set, winning 25-16.

Set two saw the two sides go back and forth to open up. UMBC would throw the first punch, gaining a 9-6 lead after a trio of Marissa Duncan kills. Stony Brook never gave up, cutting the deficit to just one at 17-16, that force coach Blanchard to use a timeout. The Seawolves used a 5-0 run to gain set point, but was fought off by the Retrievers. Freshman Abbie Mirabella (Hockessin, Del./St. Mark's) laid down a kill to tie the set at 25 all. However it was not enough, as Stony Brook won the next two points to win 26-24.

The third set saw the Seawolves take a 5-1 lead early, forcing a timeout by Blanchard. Stony Brook would fight off every rally the Retrievers threw at them. UMBC scratched and clawed back to a three point deficit at 19-16. SBU would hold on, taking the set 25-19, and the match 3-0.

Mlemchukwu, Kostic, and Walker led the way with six kills apiece. Kostic added three blocks, with Mlemchukwu adding two digs for the Retrievers. Duncan chipped in five winners for UMBC, with junior Paige Miller (Reading, Pa./Schuylkill Valley) recording a double-double, with 28 assists and ten digs.

UMBC continues the home stand against Hartford on Sunday, November 2. First serve with the Hawks is set for 1:00 p.m.
