Box Score
WASHINGTON, D.C. – UMBC designate
player Taylor Hall (Cosby, Va./Cosby) went a perfect
3-for-3 from the dish, while fellow captain, junior second
baseman Caitlin Chance (Easton, Md./Easton) blasted a
three-run home run to tie up the game in the top of the third, but
a five-run bottom of the third inning led Georgetown to an 8-3
victory in non-conference softball action at Guy Mason Field.
Georgetown moves to 18-26 on the season, having won three of its
last four contests, while UMBC (8-33) has dropped its last 12.
The Retrievers had a chance to get on the board first, stranding
the bases loaded in the top of the second inning. Chance led off
with a single to right field, sophomore center fielder Mary
Hartman (Eldersburg, Md./Century) reached on a two-out error
and freshman catcher Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South
River) drew a walk, but freshman right fielder Danielle
O'Neill (Loathian, Md./Southern) fouled out to end the
inning.
The Hoyas struck in the bottom half of the inning, as UMBC
starting pitcher Miranda Clark (Tampa, Fla./H.B. Plant)
struggled with control, hitting a batter, surrendering a single and
adding a walk to load the bases. Clark was on the verge of escaping
the jam, striking out first baseman Madeline Giaquinto and getting
third baseman Taylor Henry to foul out to third, but three more
walks in the inning, allowed Georgetown to take a 3-0
lead.
The black and gold got three back in the top of the third
inning. Hall singled to left center field, followed by a single up
the middle from junior first baseman Chelsea
Bertoglio (Laguna Hills, Calif./Laguna Hills/Saddleback
College) to set up first and second for Chance's three-run
blast to left field.
A single, followed by four-straight walks from Clark forced the
Retrievers to go to the bullpen, bringing in senior Heather
Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast). Brown got the first out of
the inning on a pop up to short, but followed by walking in the
second run of the inning. A two-run single up the middle from
shortstop Samantha Giovanniello and an errant throw from UMBC,
allowed Georgetown to the 8-3 advantage.
The Retrievers outhit Georgetown 9-5 in the contest, but
stranded at least one runner in each of the last four innings.
GU starter Lauren O'Leary earned the victory, allowing
three runs on six hits, while Clark got the loss, surrendering
seven runs on two hits and walking seven.
UMBC returns to America East action over the weekend when it
opens a three-game series against Albany, starting with a
doubleheader on Saturday, April 20. First pitch is set for 1
