Stony Brook, N.Y.- Visiting UMBC captured five of six
singles matches and defeated America East Conference foe Stony
Brook, 5-2, at Stony Brook's University Courts.
All three doubles matches were tightly-contest, but the
hosts won at the Nos. 1 and 2 positions to capture the point.
Sophomore Daniel
Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and freshman Alex
Drean (Bayonne, France) were victorious at the No. 3
position, 8-6.
UMBC recorded all five of their singles victories in
straight sets. Drean and Gray continued their outstanding play,
capturing the Nos. 4 and 6 singles matches respectively. Drean
outlasted Marcelo Locatelli, 6-4, 6-2, while Gray won by the exact
same margin over Vincius Degani.
Freshman Justin
Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy)
led the Retrievers off by winning his sixth consecutive singles
match, besting SBU's No. 1, Rick Timmermann, 6-3, 6-3.
Senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) posted UMBC's most
decisive victory, overwhelming Jose Morales, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 3
position. Sophomore Kamal
Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) was the Retrievers'
fifth victor in singles, defeating Robert Forai, 6-2,
6-4.
"The men came out flat in doubles, but really picked up
the energy and dominated singles play," head coach Rob Hubbard
said. "I am proud of the way they bounced back."
The Retrievers evened their record at 6-6 on the
season.
UMBC returns to action on Friday, April 5, when they take
on Howard in Washington, D.C.
