Box Score BALTIMORE – UMBC sophomore
attacker Jordan Lyons (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter's
Secondary) registered the second hat trick of her career, but it
was not enough to defeat No. 17 Loyola, as the Greyhounds defeated
the Retrievers, 13-7, in non-conference action on Wednesday night
at the UMBC Stadium.
UMBC (7-3) falls for the third time this season, with all three
of its losses coming to ranked opponents. The Retrievers snap a
four-game win streak with the loss, while Loyola (5-5) pick up
their third straight victory.
Loyola proved to be the aggressor, holding an advantage in shots
(26-11) and draw controls (12-9), including a 9-3 margin in
second-half draws.
The Retrievers wasted no time getting on the board as
freshman Brittany Marquess (Annapolis, Md./Broadneck)
found a wide open Lyons in front of the net, 17 seconds into the
contest.
Redshirt sophomore Taryn VanThof evened the contest at one for
Loyola with an unassisted score into the top corner of the net.
Senior Joanna Dalton put Loyola out in front for the first time in
the contest with 20:27 left in the half. Dalton took a pass from
freshman Maddy Lesher, again beating senior goalkeeper Kendall
Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y./Cold Spring Harbor) in the top
corner of the net.
Lyons tied it up with her second score of the contest,
retrieving a pass from sophomore attacker Abby
Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) and dodging a Greyhound
defender, but it only took 19 seconds for Loyola to take back its
advantage, as junior Marlee Paton picked up the draw and passed it
off to sophomore Sydney Thomas and beat the Retrievers' defense
down the field and was able to find Dalton, who was left with just
Mason to beat.
Retrievers tried to maintain possession on the offensive end,
but were unable to put away the equalizer, instead a UMBC turnover
turned into a score on the other end for the Greyhounds, as Paton
got herself on the scoreboard, spinning around a UMBC defender for
her first of two-straight goals. Paton's next came with 8:56 to go
in the half on a free position shot into the top left corner of the
net, putting the Greyhound out in front, 5-2.
The black and gold were able to get one back before the break,
with junior midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City,
Md./Mt. Hebron) drilling home her 19th goal of the season on a shot
in the middle of the goal.
Loyola scored a pair of goals to start the second half and
extend its advantage to 7-3, with sophomore Annie Thomas getting on
the board first and Dalton picking up the hat
trick.
UMBC trimmed its deficit to three, 7-4, with 25:43 to go in the
game on a free position goal from sophomore midfielder Alyssa
Semones (Westminster, Md./Westminster/Penn State), her
team-leading 23rd of the season, but the Greyhounds answered with
two more from Thomas and VanThof, making it 9-4.
The Retrievers tried to make a final push, scoring three of the
next four goals, starting with sophomore Michelle Platz's
(Cincinnati, Ohio/St. Ursula) first goal of the season coming on a
free position shot. Marquess followed by getting around her
defender and netting her third goal of the year, to bring UMBC
within three at 9-6. Loyola stopped the rally with a goal from
sophomore Hannah Schmitt, but Lyons put drove home her third goal
of the night on a pass into the middle from Wilson bring the
Retrievers back within three, 10-7. That is as close as UMBC would
get, as Loyola would hold possession to run out the clock over the
final 10 minutes of action to hang on for the victory.
Mason finished the contest with eight saves in the losing
effort.
UMBC returns to America East action on Wednesday, April 3 when
it hosts Binghamton at the UMBC Stadium. First draw is set for 4
p.m.
