BALTIMORE – UMBC softball dropped
its third-straight contest on Wednesday, falling, 19-0, to Mount
St. Mary's in non-conference action at the UMBC Softball
Stadium.
The Retrievers' pitching staff could not get things going
on a windy day at the UMBC Softball Stadium. The black and gold
used four pitchers in the contest, with each allowing a walk, hit
and earned run in the contest.
After retiring the first two batters of the game, senior
pitcher Heather Brown (Pasadena, Md./Northeast) struggled
to keep her footing right on a soggy mound and walked two of the
next three batters, also allowing a single up the middle, to load
the bases for Mount St. Mary's (3-12). Center fielder Erin
Leddy singled up the middle for a pair of RBI, before Brown was
able to get catcher Rachel Teti to ground out to end the inning.
Leddy ended the contest a perfect 4-4 from the dish, with three
runs scored and three RBI for the Mount.
The Retrievers (5-15) put two on in the bottom of the second,
with freshman Jordan Sganga (Edgewater, Md./South River)
drawing a two-out walk and sophomore Courtney
Reinfeld (Parkland, Fla./Stoneman Douglas) following with a
single to right field, but classmate Mary
Hartman (Eldersburg, Md./Century) fouled out, stranding two
runners on base.
Brown got into another jam, loading the bases in the third. One
run scored before freshman Rachel Ionata (Tampa,
Fla./Palm Harbor University) came in from the bullpen. Ionata got
the first two batters she faced to hit infield grounders, but UMBC
mishandled the first, scoring one run and extending the inning.
Mount St. Mary's would take advantage of the error and score
six more runs in the frame.
Leddy led off the top of the fourth with a double down the left
field line. She advanced to third on a wild pitch and was driven
home on a single through the left side, to give the Mount a 11-0
lead. Ionata settled down in the inning, striking out two of the
next three outs.
Mount St. Mary's would tack on eight more runs on two hits
in the top of the fifth to cruise to victory.
The Retrievers return to action this weekend for their final
home tournament of the season in the UMBC Spring Classic. The black
and gold open the tournament on Friday, March 15 with contests
against La Salle (1:45 p.m.) and Morgan State (4 p.m.).
