BALTIMORE- The UMBC men's tennis team evened its record at 5-5
on the season by defeating Navy and Delaware by identical 5-2
scores at home this weekend.
UMBC opened the weekend on Saturday with a 5-2 victory over Navy
in the first match played on campus in 2013. The Retrievers got off
to a solid start by capturing the Nos. 2 and 3 doubles matches to
take a 1-0 lead. Sophomore Daniel
Gray (Bowie, Md./The Bullis School) and freshman Alex
Drean (Bayonne, France) won, 8-4, at the No. 3 position,
quickly followed by an identical 8-4 victory by the freshman duo of
Eliott
Loubatie (Paris, France) and Melker Svard
(Gothenberg, Sweden) in the No. 2 hole.
Freshman No. 1 Justin
Carter (Randallstown, Md./National Connections Academy)
gave the hosts a 2-0 advantage with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory
over Calvin Mark. Navy trimmed the deficit with a victory at No. 6
singles, but sophomore Kamal
Patel (Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) answered with a 7-5,
6-4 triumph over Nicholas Gutsche in the No. 5 position.
Drean secured the victory for the Retrievers, rallying from a
one-set deficit to defeat Austin Jones, 4-6, 6-3, 6-2 at No. 3
singles. Svard added the fifth and final Retriever point
in another three-set triumph, as he defeated Peter McDonald, 6-4,
4-6, 6-4.
UMBC dropped the doubles point vs. the Blue Hens on Sunday, but
captured five of the six singles matches to prevail
Carter continued his outstanding singles play by defeating Troy
Beneck, 6-3, 6-0 at the No. 1 position and Svard then prevailed in
three sets, outlasting Adam Lawton, 6-2, 1-6, 6-1. Leading, 3-1,
senior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) clinched the match with a
7-5, 6-4 victory over Mike Furr at the No. 4 slot and sophomore
Gray added the fifth point with a victory at No. 6 singles.
Carter, Svard and Patel went undefeated for UMBC in singles
action vs. the Midshipmen and Blue Hens. UMBC is 5-2 in
its last seven matches.
The Retrievers have 11 days off before playing at Charleston
Southern during spring break on March 21.
