BALTIMORE- The seventh-ranked UMBC men's soccer team saw its winning streak of nine to start the season and its unbeaten streak of 18, dating back to 2012, halted as visiting Delaware scored with 3:23 to play in the second overtime period and defeated the Retrievers, 1-0.

UMBC (9-1-0) lost for the first time since Oct. 10, 2012, a 2-1 setback at Albany. The Retrievers, who were unbeaten in the last 12 home games, fell for the first time at home since Sept. 29, 2012, a 2-1 defeat versus Vermont.

Delaware (8-1-0) extended its winning streak to five games.  

The Retrievers had won two of their last three games in double overtime and nearly put the Blue Hens away in the dying seconds of the first overtime frame. With less than ten seconds to play, senior midfielder Kadeem Dacres (Rosedale, N.Y.) swung the ball in from the left side and senior forward Pete Caringi III (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall) headed the serve from close range towards the upper quadrant of the net. But Blue Hen netminder Borja Barbero made a spectacular leaping save to deny Caringi his tenth goal of the season.

With seven minutes to play in the second extra frame, the Retrievers were denied on a wild scramble in front of the Blue Hen cage. Junior midfielder Geaton Caltabiano (Lothian, Md./Mount St. Joseph) recorded the lone shot of the sequence, but it was blocked by a Delaware defender.

UMBC was unlucky on the Blue Hens' game-winning goal. UD sophomore forward Joe Dipre struck a shot from just inside the box on the left side and the ball glanced off the boot of a Retriever defender and beyond goalkeeper Phil Saunders (Perry Hall, Md./Perry Hall). Dipre was credited with his fifth goal of the season.

Both Saunders and Barbero made six saves apiece for their respective teams. UMBC outshot UD, 13-10, including, 5-1 in the second half. Caltabiano had two good opportunities in the final 25 minutes, but could not convert.

UMBC had ten corners to only a pair for Delaware and the Retrievers were whistled for 11 offsides infractions in nearly 117 minutes of play.

Earlier in the day, UMBC had moved up four slots and the Retrievers are currently ranked No. 7 in the NSCAA Continental Tire NCAA Division I Men's Soccer poll as of Oct. 1, 2013. In addition, in the first NCAA RPI Men's Soccer Rankings, UMBC is at No. 3 behind only Creighton and UCLA.

The contest was the sixth for UMBC in a span of 18 days.

Both teams open conference play in their next contests. UMBC travels to Hartford to open defense of their 2012 America East crown on Saturday, Oct. 5, while Delaware takes on James Madison in Harrisonburg on Oct. 9.
