The UMBC men's tennis team lost a narrow 4-3 decision to
visiting America East Conference rival Stony Brook at the UMBC
Tennis Courts on April 6.
The Retrievers had their two-match winning streak halted and
slipped to 7-8 on the season. Stony Brook improved to 4-7 in the
spring.
The Seawolves picked up the doubles point, but UMBC tied the
match with victories at the Nos. 2 and 3 positions. Senior Joe Adewumi
(Phoenix, Ariz.) dropped the first set, but then cruised past
Francis Bertrand, 2-6, 6-2, 6-1 at the No. 2 slot and freshman Juan
Manuel Aranzazu (Ibague, Colombia) overwhelmed Roope
Kilaheimo, 6-4, 6-1.
UMBC junior Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) recorded UMBC's third point as
he outlasted Stefan Ilic, 6-4, 3-6, 6-4, but the Retrievers could
not pull out the Nos. 5 and 6 matches. Freshman Kamal Patel
(Germantown, Md./Seneca Valley) took the first set off Robert
Forai, but the SBU junior prevailed in three sets, 2-6, 7-5,
6-3.
