Vestal, N.Y.- Playing on Senior Night, an inspired Binghamton
men's lacrosse squad defeated UMBC, 15-8 at the Bearcat Sports
Complex.
Despite the loss, UMBC (5-7, 3-2 America East) will the No. 2
seed and host No. 3 Albany at UMBC Stadium on May 2. Binghamton
finishes their season at 4-9, 1-4.
Junior attackman Scott Jones (Port
Coquitlam, B.C.) and sophomore running mate Matt Gregoire
(Crofton, Md./South River) each scored three goals for the
Retrievers. Junior attackman Joe Lustgarten
(Wading River, N.Y.) added three assists.
UMBC had replies as Binghamton took leads of 1-0 and 2-1 in the
first quarter, as Gregoire and junior midfielder Dave Brown
(Coopersburg, Pa.) tallied and Brown's goal evened the game at 2-2
with 6:10 to play in the first quarter.
But Binghamton went on a 4-0 run and took a 6-2 advantage with
10 minutes to play in the second quarter. Gregoire countered with
goals 42 seconds apart and UMBC crept within 6-4 with 5:46 to play
in the half, but the red-hot Bearcats scored four consecutive goals
in the final 3:08 of the half and led, 10-4 at the break.
Back-to-back scores by Jones early in the third period trimmed
the deficit to 11-6 with 11:12 remaining in the period, and UMBC
had an extended possession after winning the draw, but could not
cash in. Binghamton's Brandon Planck, who led all scorers with five
goals and two helpers, started a game-sealing 4-0 run by scoring
with 4:34 remaining in the stanza.
Binghamton scored on 15 of 29 shots as they outshot the
Retrievers, 29-27. They also controlled the face-off x,
taking 19 of 27 draws.
