Women's Lacrosse Furious Rally Falls Just Short at No. 16 Loyola, 12-11

Box Score

BALTIMORE- A furious rally by the UMBC women's lacrosse team fell just short, as the No. 16 Loyola Greyhounds held on to defeat the Retrievers, 12-11, at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

UMBC junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge, N.J.) continued her torrid play, leading UMBC with four goals, including cashing in on all three of her free position shots. Senior midfielder Alicia Krause (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) added three goals, while senior attacker Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) contributed two goals and one assist.

The Retrievers trailed, 12-8, with 17:13 remaining before the Retrievers made their comeback. Coady scored with 14:32 remaining and Krause also scored an unassisted goal to slice the deficit to 12-10 with 8:23 remaining. UMBC continued to pressure the Greyhounds and after drawing a yellow card on a Loyola defender, sophomore midfielder Kristen Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) cashed in on a free position opportunity to bring the visitors to within a goal.

UMBC would control the ensuing draw and Krause eventually got a look at a game-tying goal, but her effort with 4:27 to play was went over the cage. Seconds later, Loyola would cause a Retriever turnover in the offense end and UMBC never regained possession of the ball.

Cox got the Retrievers on the board first just 42 seconds into the contest, but Loyola went on a 4-0 run over a 10-minute span to take the lead for good. The Greyhounds led, 6-4, at the break.

Loyola outshot UMBC, 23-21, but the Retrievers scored on five of six free position attempts, while the Greyhounds were 0-for-2.

Bilney controlled seven draws, as UMBC took 15 of 25 in the contest.

Cox now has 17 goals on the season.

UMBC fell to 2-4 on the campaign, while Loyola improved to 3-2.
