Women's Basketball Heads to Long Island to Face Stony Brook on Wednesday

BALTIMORE, MD. - The UMBC women's basketball team heads to Long Island to continue its America East schedule and take on Stony Brook on Wednesday.  Tip-off at Pritchard Gymnasium is scheduled for 7 p.m.

It will be a homecoming of sorts for head coach Phil Stern, as well as senior guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville), who are both from the area.

RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is now 12-12 and 6-5 in America East play following Saturday's win over Maine, 66-44.

The Retrievers held the Black Bears to just 19 points in the second half to widen a 32-25 halftime margin and sweep the season series for the first time since 2010.

Senior Erin Brown led all scorers with 18 points, while classmate Michelle Kurowski added 15 points.

In addition, freshman Lauren Chase and senior Topé Obajolu scored 12 points and 10 points, respectively, to give UMBC four players in double figures.

Kurowski and Brown, who leads the America East in scoring with 15.2 points per game, are two of just 12 Retrievers ever in the 1,000-point/500-rebound club.

UMBC is the preseason favorite to win the America East Conference after winning the 2011 regular-season title with a 13-3 record in league play. The Retrievers posted a 20-12 overall mark, matching the school record for wins in a season, and earned a berth in the WNIT after falling to Hartford in the America East semifinals.

SEAWOLF UPDATE: Stony Brook sits at ninth in the America East at 4-20 overall and 1-10 in conference play, after dropping a 57-47 decision at Albany on Saturday. Senior Whitney Davis led Stony Brook with 16 points against the Great Danes. Earlier this season, UMBC defeated Stony Brook, 73-47, at the RAC Arena in Baltimore. Erin Brown scored a game-high 20 points in the win, while Long Island native Michelle Kurowski added 14 points. Topé Obajolu tied the UMBC record with her 132nd career block in the game.
