Women's Lacrosse Routs Host George Mason, 13-1

Box Score

Fairfax, Va.- UMBC junior midfielder Lindsay Cox (High Bridge,N.J.) scored a career-high five goals and the defense throttled host George Mason in a 13-1 Retriever victory at George Mason Stadium.

The one goal allowed was the Retrievers' fewest since permitting just one score on Feb. 14, 2009, when they routed Howard, 19-1.

The Retrievers wasted little time in establishing control in the game, as they scored three times before the Patriots got possession. Cox scored just 32 seconds into the game and sophomore midfielder Shannon Harkey (Purcellville, Va.) added her first Retriever career goal on free position shot at the 1:26 mark. After sophomore midfielder Kristin Bilney (Ellicott City, Md./Mount Hebron) controlled her third consecutive draw, freshman Abby Wilson (Bel Air, Md./Fallston) converted an Emily Coady (Westminster, Md./Westminster) to give the visitors a 3-0 advantage 3:08 into the contest.

Cox scored three additional first half goals as the Retrievers built an 8-0 advantage before 20 minutes had elapsed. The Patriots would score their lone goal with 5:25 to play in the half, but UMBC led, 8-1, at the break.

Five different Retrievers scored in the second half, led by Coady who added a goal and an assist in the final 30 minutes.

Coady pitched in with a goal and two helpers, while Bilney and Harkey scored two apiece. BIlney added eight draw controls, as the Retrievers dominated time of possession by taking 12 of 16 draws.

UMBC (1-1) outshot their hosts, 37-10, and were 14-of-14 on clears.

Junior goalkeeper Kendall Mason (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) got credit for the win, making one save in the first 30 minutes. Freshman Anna Barnett (Midland, Texas) saw her first collegiate action and had five stops without allowing a second half score.

George Mason netminder Brittany Pastrana made 18 saves for the Patriots.

UMBC plays another CAA team on the road when they visit Towson on Feb. 29.
