Kelly and Schmidt Record Career-Highs to Propel Volleyball to Four Set Victory over Binghamton

BALTIMORE – Senior Katie Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar) and sophomore Hannah Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) each recorded a career- high in kills, while junior Emily Vandegrift(Leesburg, Va./Loudoun County) was also in double-digits as the UMBC volleyball team downed Binghamton 3-1 (25-18, 25-14, 20-25, 25-18), Friday night in America East action at the RAC Arena.

With the win, UMBC moves to 11-13 overall this season with a 4-3 mark in conference play while Binghamton falls to 7-16 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Kelly's 14 kills broke her previous career-best of nine which she set against UC-Riverside last season, while Schmidt's 19 winners bested her high of 18 set against Fairleigh Dickinson which also occurred in 2011.  The balanced attack was led by junior Mallory McIntyre (Winnipeg, Manitoba/St. Mary's Academy) who set her own career-high, recording 51 assists against the Bearcats.

Senior Ali Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair) and junior Ali Goc (Oshawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin) each scooped up a match-best 13 digs and junior Hallie Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) added 12 more digs for the Retrievers.

Kristin Hovie paced the Bearcats with 13 kills while just missing out on a double-double with nine digs.  Iva Parteleva was also in double figures with 11 winners while Alexandra Warner led Binghamton with 13 digs.

The visitors took the initiative in the match, jumping out to an early 10-6 lead after a kill by Parteleva.  UMBC rallied immediately, however, and claimed seven consecutive points to take the lead for good in the set.  Binghamton fought back into the set and cut the lead to two at 16-14, but could get no closer as three straight Retriever points closed out the set for a 25-18 win.

In the second frame, the two squads were evenly matched, tying on seven occasions, the last one coming at 8-8.  From there UMBC ran off six straight points to once again put the set beyond reach and kept it that way by winning ten of the final 11 points in a 25-14 set victory.

Binghamton came out swinging in the third set and streaked to a 15-8 lead.  The Retrievers returned with four straight points of their own to cut the lead to 15-12 on a kill by Schmidt. Binghamton extended the lead again, only to see UMBC get within two, 20-18, but the hosts could not get any closer as the Bearcats forced an extra set by winning the third, 25-20.

UMBC put the fourth set away early, winning the opening six points and never looked back in a frame in which the two teams were never tied.   Binghamton rallied to make a game of it at 12-9, but UMBC steadily built momentum to win the match with a 25-18 win in the fourth.

UMBC has the remainder of the weekend off and then travels for a doubleheader next weekend in New England.  The Retrievers take on Providence at 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26 before facing New Hampshire on Sunday, Oct. 28.
