The UMBC women's tennis team completed a weekend sweep and
improved to 2-1 on the season with a 7-0 victory over St. Joseph's
(1-2) on Sunday at Twin Lakes Racquet Club.
The Retrievers swept the doubles matches, paced by a pair of 8-1
victories. The No. 1 duo of sophomore Kim
Berghaus (Offenbach, Germany) and senior Carmen
Jackman (Silver Spring, Md./Blake) triumphed over the
Hawks' Aurora Davis/Casey Robinson, followed quickly by a clinching
win at No. 3 doubles by junior Heidi
Danielsson (Jonkoping, Sweden) and freshman Isabel
Aldunate (Bowie, Md.), who defeated Nicole Esposito and
Tara Walsh.
Jackman posted UMBC's first victory in singles, defeating Davis,
6-1, 6-4 at No. 3 singles. Then grad student Shalini Sahoo
(New Dehli, India) put the Retrievers ahead, 3-0, with a 6-2, 6-2
victgory over Devi Jadeja, 6-2, 6-2..Berghaus clinched the match
victory, rallying past Robinson, 3-6, 6-2 (10-6).
"I felt we played our doubles in very strong fashion today and
then carried it over into the singles," head coach Rob Hubbard
said. " We competed well from start to finish today."
