BALTIMORE—The UMBC volleyball team (5-3)
saw its four-match win streak snapped with a 3-0 loss to Towson on
Saturday, but rebounded with a 3-0 victory over host Morgan State
on the second day of the Battle of Baltimore.
In the first match of the day, the Retrievers held leads in all
three sets, but the Tigers prevailed, 25-21, 25-23, 25-19. UMBC hit
just .046 but held Towson to .194. FreshmanHannah
Schmidt (Catonsville, Md./Mount de Sales) led the
Retrievers with 12 kills, while juniors Katie
Kelly (Diamond Bar, Calif./Diamond Bar)
and Ali
Loynachan (Whitby, Ontario, Canada/R.S.
McLaughlin Collegiate) had four blocks each.
The second match of the day was a different story, as the
Retrievers controlled the Bears throughout, winning 25-13, 25-15,
25-19. UMBC hit .313 to Morgan State's .066.
Sophomore Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) posted a
double-double with 18 digs and 10 kills while hitting an
outstanding .429, while Schmidt smashed 12 kills and hit .462. In
addition, Loynachan had seven kills while hitting .357.
Senior Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha) recorded 36
assists, and freshman Dalton
Tolliver (Ortonville, Mich./Notre Dame Prep) led
the Retrievers with five blocks.
At the end of the day, Carter was named to the All-Tournament
Team. She finished the weekend with 30 kills and 43 digs. She was
joined on the all-tournament squad by Jac Bullock of Loyola, Erin
Cox of Morgan State and Towson's Aubrey Kirven and I'ishah
Keliikoa. Kirven was named the tournament's MVP.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, when they host Navy
at 6 p.m. in their home opener at the RAC Arena.
