PHILADELPHIA—The UMBC volleyball team
(10-5) saw its three-match winning streak snapped in a 3-1 loss to
host Penn Saturday afternoon on the final day of the Crowne Plaza
Philadelphia West/Penn Invitational at the Palestra.
The Quakers limited UMBC to an .098 hitting percentage while
taking the match in four sets, 25-20, 20-25, 25-19, 25-10. After
three close sets, the Retrievers hit just -.026 in the fourth while
allowing Penn to hit .387.
Sophomore Hallie
Carter (Huntington Beach, Calif./Edison) recorded
her eighth double-double of the season with a team-high 15 kills to
go along with 13 digs. Senior Allie
Spaay (Kenosha, Wis./Kenosha Tremper) also posted
a double-double with 31 assists and a team-best 21 digs.
Penn's Amanda Pacheco led all players with a .343 hitting
percentage, while Lauren Martin had a match-best 18 kills. In
addition, Dani Shepherd recorded 32 digs.
Following the game, Carter and sophomore Ali
Goc (Ottawa, Ontario/R.S. McLaughlin Collegiate)
were selected to the all-tournament team. Carter led the Retrievers
with 29 kills in three games, while Goc had a team-best 43
digs.
The Retrievers return to action on Friday, when they open
America East Conference play against Stony Brook at 6 p.m. at the
RAC Arena.
