BALTIMORE – UMBC picked up a 3-0 victory over NJIT on Friday night, clinching a spot in the America East Tournament and putting them in the driver's seat to host. The Retrievers improved to 6-2 in America East play and 10-10 overall.
The Retrievers were dominant from the jump, taking the first set 25-15 and following with 25-22 and 25-21 set wins to improve to 15-0 all-time against the Highlanders.
Laura Fuehrer led the way from the middle on the offensive end, tallying 12 kills on 20 swings.
Jalynn Brown chipped in with 10, and
Claudia Llamas added eight for the Retrievers as they hit .196 on the night. It was the fifth 10-plus-kill night of the season for Fuehrer and the 16
th for Brown.
Honored as the lone senior on Senior Night,
Serin Maden got the start, handed out 21 assists, and racked up three of the Retrievers' eight aces.
Defensively,
Hannah Howard had 13 digs, and Fuehrer added four blocks to the cause as UMBC totaled 13 blocks on the night.
UMBC is right back at it inside Chesapeake Employers Insurance Arena on Sunday afternoon for another America East matchup with New Hampshire. The match is set to begin at 1 p.m. and is volleyball's Alumni Appreciation Match.
