BALTIMORE—Senior forward Brooke Piper (London, Ontario/A.B. Lucas) scored with 5:34 remaining, but it was not enough, as the UMBC women's soccer team (0-7-0) fell to Saint Joseph's (2-3-2) by a score of 2-1 Wednesday evening at Retriever Soccer Park.

The teams played to a scoreless draw for the first 45 minutes, with the Hawks holding a slight edge in shots, 10-8. But the visitors turned up the pressure in the second half, taking 17 shots and scoring twice.

Saint Joseph's first got on the board early in the 59th minute, as forward Mo Hawkins, from the top of the arc, managed to place her shot just under the crossbar in the top left corner. Just five minutes later, forward Jen Pfeiffer made it 2-0 in favor of the Hawks when she put in her own rebound after a great save by UMBC sophomore goalie Lauren Kadet (Oakville, Ontario/St. Thomas Aquinas).

The score remained the same until the 85th minute, when freshman back Melissa Hummel (Downingtown, Pa./Downingtown East) sent a corner kick into the box, which was headed out to sophomore back Shannon McGuinness (East Meadow, N.Y./East Meadow). McGuinness' shot from the top of the box was saved by Saint Joseph's goalie Lauren Jancuska, but Piper, the America East Player of the Game, collected the rebound and sent it in for her first goal of the season.

Kadet and Jancuska each made six saves between the pipes. The Hawks outshot the Retrievers, 27-17, and held a 5-3 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action on Friday, when they visit VMI for a 4 p.m. kickoff.
