Annapolis, Md. – The UMBC women's soccer team lost 3-0 against the Navy Mids on Sunday evening at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility.
UMBC (4-3-3) started strong in the opening stages of the match but was unable to convert their chances.
In the 8th minute, junior forward
Payton Schenning, who led the team with three shots, took a great strike from 20 yards after evading a defender, but her shot sailed just over the far post.
Just four minutes later, junior forward
Grace Dunbar made an excellent cross from the right side for Schenning, but Navy goalkeeper Natasha Stramrood denied Schenning's header from the center of the box.
Navy (7-3-0) broke the scoreless tie with 26:17 remaining in the first half when forward Chiara Cosenza scored after receiving a through ball from forward Kayana Adlam at the top right side of the box. UMBC graduate student goalie
Kalli Williams nearly made a fantastic stop, but Cosenza's attempt was too tricky to handle, and the ball trickled into the lower left corner of the net.
The Mids scored again in the 40th minute when Mimi Abusham headed in a corner kick from Isabella Romano, who recorded two assists, at the back post.
Navy capped off their scoring with 3:04 left before halftime. Katia Katsar-Hoeffer received a well-placed cross into the box and scored from seven yards out, with Romano and Ali Barrow credited with assists.
UMBC was outshot 16-8, but only seven of Navy's attempts were on target. Williams made four saves during the match.
The Retrievers will begin America East Conference play next Sunday afternoon at Binghamton.
