New Haven, Conn. – The second-seeded UMBC men's tennis
team blanked No. 3 Boston U., 4-0, in the America East semifinal
match held at the Yale Tennis Center.
The Retrievers advance to their second consecutive conference
title match, where they will again face Binghamton. The top-seeded
Bearcats defeated Stony Brook, 5-0, in the other semifinal
match.
Tomorrow's 11:00 a.m. final will be a rematch of last year's
title match. UMBC has competed in the title match in four of the
past five seasons, winning the title in 2007 and finishing as
runner-ups in 2008 and 2010.
In today's match, UMBC (14-5) took the doubles point as the
sophomore duo of Gaulthier
Berret (Lagny Sur Marne, France) andAdam
Duprat (Bobigny, France) opened with an 8-1 victory at the
No. 3 position. The No. 2 team of senior Mwali
Phiri (Yonkers,N.Y.) and junior Rasid
Winklaar(Willmestad, Curacao) gave UMBC a 1-0 lead with an 8-4
victory over the Terrier duo of Frieder/Pendleton.
Durprat, Winklaar, and Berret cruised in singles play to propel
UMBC to victory. Duprat defeated Brunet, 6-1, 6-1 at the No. 4
position and his countryman edged Hallenbeck, 6-3, 6-3 at the No. 5
position. Winklaar triumphed over Frieder, 6-2, 6-1 and the other
matches were abandoned with the Retriever victory assured.
Binghamton defeated UMBC, 6-1, on April 2 in Baltimore. Berret
recorded UMBC's lone point in the match.
