Seniors Shine in Softball's 6-1 Win over Siena

BALTIMOREUMBC senior hurler Stephanie Weigman (Elkridge,Md./Archbishop Spalding) allowed just two hits, and senior second baseman Lauren Brummell (Hanover, Va./Hanover) went 4-for-4 to lead the UMBC softball team (3-6) to a 6-1 victory over Siena (3-4) Saturday afternoon on the second day of the UMBC Retriever Classic.

The Retrievers scored three runs in the first inning, with two runs coming on a two-out single by senior designated player Lauren O'Malley (Pasadena, Md./Archbishop Spalding). UMBC then added another in the second when Brummell's single drove in sophomore pinch runner Amy Metcalfe (Finksburg, Md./Westminster/Iona).

Weigman cruised through the first three innings, allowing just one walk. Siena's first hit of the game was a one-out triple in the fourth inning by designated player Jessika-Jo Sandrini, and she scored on a sacrifice fly by right fielder Courtney Brinkman. But that was all the Saints would get, as Weigman retired nine of the final 12 batters of the game.

The Retrievers, meanwhile, added two runs in the bottom of the fourth on a Brummell double, a walk by senior center fielder Lynn Pronobis (Waldorf, Md./McDonough), a wild pitch and an RBI single by senior third baseman Julia Culotta (Street, Md./North Harford/Tennessee).

Weigman (3-3) earned the complete game victory after allowing just two hits and two walks and striking out six. Amanda Filipazzo (1-2) took the loss after giving up six runs on eight hits in four innings of work.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, when they face Princeton at 1:30 p.m. and Iona at 3:30 p.m. on the final day of the UMBC Retriever Classic.
