—The visiting Penn Quakers (4-2-2) scored three second-half goals en route to a 3-0 victory over UMBC (0-8-1) Tuesday evening in women's soccer action at UMBC Stadium.
The teams battled to a scoreless tie at the half, but Penn took over in the second period, outshooting the Retrievers, 20-1.
In the 51st minute, UMBC sophomore goalie Mo Van Vlerah (Ijamsville, Md./Northwest) got her hands on a shot by Penn defender Megan Cassidy, but forward Jessica Fuccello collected the rebound and put the ball in the net to give the Quakers a 1-0 lead.
Nearly 11 minutes later, the ball deflected to Penn forward Marin McDermott off a UMBC defender, and McDermott's point-blank shot from the center of the box found the back of the net for a 2-0 advantage.
McDermott struck again in the 71st minute when she collected a pass from forward Alex Dayneka in front of the goal and shot the ball past Van Vlerah.
Van Vlerah finished with six saves in the game, while Penn goalie Caroline Williams stopped three shots.
The Quakers out-shot the Retrievers, 28-4, and held a 7-1 advantage on corner kicks. Junior midfielder Elyse Bilardo (Aston, Pa./Sun Valley) took two of UMBC's four shots.
The Retrievers return to action on Friday, Oct. 2, when they travel to Delaware State for a 7 p.m. kickoff.
