BALTIMORE - Host Loyola (2-1) scored the first eight goals of the game as the UMBC women's lacrosse team (1-2) dropped a 21-6 decision to its cross-town rival Wednesday afternoon at Diane Geppi-Aikens Field.
The Retrievers finally got on the board with 9:48 remaining in the first half when sophomore midfielder Amanda Pappas (Pasadena, Md./Chesapeake) converted a feed from sophomore attack Erika Braerman (Fallston, Md./Fallston).
The Greyhounds scored twice more to take a 10-1 lead, but UMBC tallied the final two goals of the half to go into the locker room down, 10-3. The Retrievers' scores came within a minute of each other on a free-position goal by Pappas and an unassisted tally by sophomore midfielder Ashley Stodter (Silver Spring, Md./Good Counsel).
Loyola's Colleen O'Keefe scored the second of her three goals just 31 seconds into the second stanza, but UMBC freshman midfielder Bria Phillips (Davidsonville, Md./Coronado (Calif.)) answered less than a minute later with a free-position goal to make the score 11-4.
But the Greyhounds scored the next nine in a row, including three by Grace Gavin, to take a 20-4 lead. Braerman and junior defender Sarah Willis (Bel Air, Md./C. Milton Wright) each tallied in the final two minutes for the Retrievers.
Pappas was the only Retriever with more than one goal, while Stodter and Braerman each posted two points on a goal and an assist.
Gavin led all scorers with six points on four goals and two assists, while O'Keefe and Abby Rehfuss also notched hat tricks for Loyola.
UMBC junior goalie Kate Quick (Phoenix, Md./Maryvale Prep) made eight saves and allowed 14 goals in 40:29 of play, while senior Susie Sweeney (Madison, N.J./Madison) stopped two shots and allowed six goals in 14:21 and sophomore Natalie Rau (Forest Hill, Md./Fallston) allowed the one goal in 5:10 of action.
The Retrievers return to action on Tuesday, March 3, when they host cross-town rival Towson in their home opener at 3:30 p.m. at UMBC Stadium.
