Retrievers Drop 70-61 Decision to Delaware

BALTIMORE—Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski (Hicksville, N.Y./Hicksville) and senior guard Carlee Cassidy (Syracuse, N.Y./Westhill) each scored 17 points, but the UMBC women's basketball team (4-3) saw its three-game losing streak snapped in a 70-61 loss to Delaware (3-3) Saturday afternoon at the RAC Arena.

The Blue Hens held the Retrievers to just 21.9 percent shooting in the first half and built a 35-23 lead at intermission.

Delaware extended its lead to 17 points at 39-56 with 9:07 left in the game, but an 18-6 UMBC run cut it to just five, 62-57, with 2:11 to play. Cassidy and sophomore guard Katie Brooks (Maryville, Tenn./Heritage) each scored six points in that span. The Retrievers drained four 3-pointers during their comeback, including a pair by Cassidy.

Kurowski added nine rebounds, five assists and two steals and was named America East Player of the Game.

Delaware forward Elena Delle Donne, a Naismith Player of the Year candidate, led four Blue Hens in double figures with 20 points and added eight rebounds, four assists and four blocks.

The Retrievers have a week off before returning to action on Saturday, Dec. 12, when they take on cross-town rival Coppin State in the first of their six-game road trip.
