BALTIMORE--The UMBC women's basketball team (0-1) goes for its first win of the season on Sunday when it hosts in-state rival UMES at 1 p.m. at the RAC Arena. Watch the game live at UMBCRetrievers.tv or listen on Fox 1370 AM.
RETRIEVER UPDATE: UMBC is coming off a 68-57 loss to Virginia on Friday. The Retrievers hung with the 14th-ranked Cavaliers for most of the game, leading with 7:52 remaining. Sophomore guard Michelle Kurowski led all scorers with 21 points, while junior forward Meghan Colabella posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Sophomore forward Erin Brown gave the Retrievers three players in double figures with 11 points. Senior guard Carlee Cassidy tied Felice Pinkney for sixth place on UMBC's all-time scoring list with 1,237 career points. Kurowski was a perfect 7-for-7 from the foul line, giving her 101 career free throws made and moving her into second place all-time for career free throw percentage at .828, while Cassidy ranks third at .797.
HAWK UPDATE: Sunday's game marks the season opener for UMES, which was picked to finish second in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference preseason poll after posting a 15-14 overall record last season and advancing to the semifinals of the MEAC Tournament as the fourth seed. Forward April McBride, a two-time All-MEAC First Team selection, was named to the Preseason All-MEAC First Team for the second year in a row after averaging 16.2 ppg and 8.6 rpg in 2008-09.
Who's Up Next: The Retrievers hit the road for three games, beginning with a trip to Philadelphia to take on St. Joseph's. The Hawks hold a 2-0 series advantage, but the teams have not faced off since 2002. St. Joseph's dropped its season opener to UMBC's America East rival New Hampshire on Friday and will travel to Providence before hosting the Retrievers.
Inside the Series: Sunday's game marks the seventh all-time meeting between UMBC and UMES, and the Retrievers hold a 5-1 series advantage. The first meeting occurred on Jan. 23, 1982, a 59-57 victory for the visiting UMBC. UMES is 0-3 all-time at the RAC Arena.
In the teams' last meeting, Nov. 30, 2008, at the Iona Thanksgiving Classic, the Retrievers defeated the Hawks, 92-70. UMBC forward Erin Brown posted her first career double-double with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while guard Katie Brooks finished just shy of a triple-double with 14 points, nine assists and seven rebounds, and guards Carlee Cassidy and Michelle Kurowski combined for 37 points. UMES forward Josephine McLane led the Hawks with 16 points.
