WASHINGTON, D.C.—American midfielder Marissa Crollett's goal in the 65th minute broke a scoreless tie and proved to be the game winner as the Eagles (1-2-0) held on to defeat UMBC (0-4-0), 1-0, Sunday afternoon on the final day of the D.C. Invitational at Georgetown's North Kehoe Field.
The Retrievers did not allow a first-half goal for the first time in the young 2008 season, as freshman keeper Mo Van Vlerah (Boyds, Md./Northwest) tied her career high with six saves, including three in each period.
But UMBC still had trouble creating scoring opportunities, taking just three shots in the game, with the only shot on goal coming in the 20th minute by junior midfielder JoAnne Jackson (Portland, Ore./Lincoln).
Crollett's goal came at the 64:15 mark on a pass from midfielder Lindsey Miller. The Retrievers' best opportunity in the second half came on the first of four corner kicks in a three-minute span, but freshman forward LeAnne Edgar's (Mechanicsville, Md./Chopticon) shot was blocked by an Eagle defender in front of the net.
American out-shot UMBC, 14-3, and held a 6-5 edge on corner kicks.
The Retrievers return to action on Friday, when they host Sacred Heart under the lights at UMBC Stadium at 7 p.m.
