COCKEYSVILLE, Md.-- The UMBC men's cross country team finished four runners in the top-five and to finish first in the Towson Invitational in Cockeysville, Md. Friday afternoon. On the women's side, junior Sara Parkinson (Lancashire, England/Loughborough University) finished first as the Retrievers placed third.
Sophomore Paul Zwama (Groningen, Netherlands/CSG Dingstede) led the field across the line for the Retrievers, finishing with a time of 26:33. Senior Anthony Kelhower (Mt. Laurel, N.J./Lenape) finished second in a time of 26:37, while senior Andrew Madison (Edgewater, Md./South River) and sophomore Michael Christmas (Invercargill, New Zealand/James Hargest College) finished fourth and fifth overall. Senior Josh Okoniewski rounded out the scoring for UMBC in 11th overall.
The Retrievers finished with 23 points, 41 less than second place Mount St. Mary's, while Albany finished in third with 65 points.
On the women's side, Parkinson led the Retrievers across the line in a time of 18:14, beating out Towson's Liya Kasimova by one second for the win. Junior Suzanne Gabriel (Falls Church, Va./McLean) finished in 11th overall in a time of 19:15, while freshman Keri Wilson finished in 23rd in a time of 20:09. Sophomore Cortney Crouse (Union Bridge, Md./Linganore) and senior Emily Saltsman (Fallston, Md./Fallston) rounded out the scoring for the Retrievers, finishing in 31st and 38th overall.
UMBC finished with 90 points, while Towson finished with 41, four less than Albany, for the win.
The Retrievers return to action Oct. 18 when they travel to Princeton, N.J. to compete in the Princeton Invitational at 10:00 a.m.
