Men's Soccer Falls to Vermont, 1-0

Baltimore--Vermont's Jordan Crasilneck took advantage of a defensive miscue by host UMBC and scored the game's lone goal in the 50th minute to give the visiting Catamounts a 1-0 win over the Retrievers before 556 at UMBC Soccer Stadium.

The defending America East champions extended their unbeaten streak to five and won for the first time in three matches at UMBC. Vermont improved to 6-2-4 on the year and 2-0-0 in league play, while UMBC fell to 5-4-2, 0-2-1.

The Retrievers have failed to score in all three America East contests in a span of eight days.

On the game-winning play, Catamount senior back Connor Tobin lofted a seemingly harmless ball into the right side of the Retriever box. But the UMBC defense allowed the ball to bound off the turf, and Crasilneck headed it over Retriever netminder Steve King (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) and into the goal from 13 yards out.

UMBC gambled to get the game-tying goal down the stretch, but failed to get shots on target. The best chance occurred on a deep throw in by sophomore B.J. Quigley (Essex, Md./Archbishop Curley) in the 89th minute, but classmate John Paul Waraksa (Media, Pa.) could not get a shot off in a crowd from five yards away.

Retriever sophomore midfielder Levi Houapeu (Germantown, Md./Watkins Mill) was named Man of the Match for UMBC, while Vermont freshman midfielder Yannick Lewis earned the honor for the visitors.

King made six saves for UMBC, as the Catamounts outshot the Retrievers, 12-10. Vermont senior keeper Roger Scully had three saves, as Vermont blanked UMBC for the second straight year.

The overall series is now tied at 2-2-2 and Vermont is unbeaten (2-0-2) in the last four meetings.

UMBC plays its final non-conference game of the season on Tuesday when they visit Virginia Tech.
