UMBC Women's Soccer Topples Temple, 2-0

Baltimore-For the second time in three games, junior forward Jessica Young and senior midfielder Mary Hearin each scored for the Retrievers, as the UMBC women's soccer team (2-2-1) evened its record with a 2-0 victory over Temple (1-3-0) Friday afternoon. The game marked the Retrievers' return to UMBC Soccer Stadium after more than a year.

Hearin broke UMBC's four-game streak of scoreless first halves when she put the ball into the upper far corner of the net from 25 yards out after a throw-in at the 11:11 mark. The goal was her career-high second of the season, and her four points in 2006 match her career best. The score also counted as the game-winner, the second of her career.

The Retrievers took a 1-0 lead into halftime, but Young sent senior forward Megan Jupiter's feed into the lower left corner from 15 yards out to give UMBC a 2-0 advantage in the 49th minute. The goal was Young's team-best third of the season and the 21st of her career, giving her sole possession of sixth place all-time at UMBC. In addition, with 47 career points, she moves into a tie with Christa Gredlein for ninth place all-time. The assist was the first of Jupiter's career.

UMBC sophomore goalie Christine Bacinski fended off eight Temple shots in the second half, recording five saves, as the Retrievers held on for the 2-0 victory. The shutout was UMBC's first of the season.

Senior Robin Babaris started the game between the pipes and posted one save in 45 minutes of play. Temple goalie Tiffany Kasunich went the distance and registered two saves.

The Owls out-shot UMBC, 13-7, and held a 6-1 advantage on corner kicks.

The Retrievers return to action Sunday, Sept. 10, as they host Radford at 1 p.m. at UMBC Soccer Stadium.
