Women's Basketball Hits the Road, Faces American Tuesday Night

Coming off its second win of the season, the UMBC women's basketball team (2-3) hits the road Tuesday to take on American at 7 p.m. at Bender Arena in Washington, D.C.

The Retrievers defeated NJIT, 78-51, on Nov. 26, the team's largest margin of victory since defeating Navy by 27 points on Dec. 30, 2005. Five players scored in double figures for UMBC, led by freshman guard Carlee Cassidy, whose 16 points were one short of her career high. Senior forward Sharri Rohde scored 15 points, reaching double figures for the third straight game and the fourth time this season. Junior forward Amanda Robinson scored 10 points and added eight rebounds off the bench, en route to Marlow Sports America East Player of the Game honors.

The Eagles are 1-5 on the season and have lost five straight. They are coming off a 57-55 loss to West Virginia in the Loyola-Marymount Tournament over the weekend. Liz Hayes scored 20 points in the contest and leads the team with 15.8 ppg.

Tuesday marks the 12th meeting in the all-time series between the Retrievers and Eagles. American holds a slight advantage, 6-5, but UMBC has won four of the last five contests, including last season's 68-56 victory on Dec. 1.
