Women's Basketball Falls to Towson, 50-45

Baltimore-The UMBC women's basketball team (1-3) held visiting Towson (4-0) to just 29.1 percent shooting, but the Retrievers themselves only shot 31.5 percent from the floor and lost a closely contested game, 50-45, Tuesday evening at RAC Arena.

Both teams shot below 30 percent in the first half, with the Tigers shooting at just a .214 clip and the Retrievers connecting on only 29.6 percent of their field goal attempts. The Retrievers took a 21-17 lead into halftime, and senior point guard Brittnie Hughes led the team with six points, while Towson's Shanae Baker-Brice had a game-high eight points and six rebounds in the first period.

UMBC opened the second half on a 12-6 scoring run over the first six and a half minutes of play, sparked by 10 points from junior guard Kristin Drabyn. The Retrievers led, 35-25, with 12:54 to go, but Towson rattled off 17 of the next 22 points to take a 42-40 lead with 3:06 remaining.

UMBC took a 45-44 lead with 1:23 to play on senior forward Sharri Rohde's jumper and ensuing free throw, but the Tigers regained the lead 25 seconds later when Baker-Brice was fouled scoring on a layup. Jamell Beasley put the game away for Towson with a jumper with 27 seconds on the clock.

Drabyn and Rohde each scored 12 points to lead the Retrievers. Rohde added a team-high eight rebounds, while sophomore center Mackenzie Butler had seven. Hughes was held in double digits for the first time all season, as she scored eight points but added seven assists and four steals.

Three players scored in double digits for the Tigers, with Baker-Brice leading all players with 13 points. Holly Mahan and Beasley added 12 apiece. Baker-Brice and Mahan posted a game-high nine rebounds, and Baker-Brice also had four steals.

The Retrievers return to action on Sunday, Nov. 26, when they host NJIT at the RAC Arena. Game time is 2 p.m.
