Baltimore, Md. - UMBC (6-4-2, 2-3-0 America East) scored a season-high four goals as Retriever men's soccer team defeated league rival Maine (3-5-3, 0-3-2 America East) by a score of 4-1 this afternoon at the UMBC Soccer Stadium.
The Retrievers struck early when junior Powell Cucchiella (Baltimore, Md./Eastern Tech) scored his fourth goal of the season 13:41 into the game. Less than three minutes later, senior Derek McElligott (Baltimore, Md./Greater Grace Christian Acad.) would find teammate Matt Watson (Redditch, England/Bridley Moor) alone, eight yards from a wide-open Maine net to put the Retrievers up, 2-0. UMBC outshot the visitors, 7-3 in the first half and would enter the break with a 2-0 lead.
In the second half, the Retrievers struck early once again, scoring at the 54:57 mark, after Watson passed the ball behind him, allowing senior George Bakoulas (Baltimore, Md./Archbishop Curley) to run right down the middle for the third UMBC tally. At 58:58, the Retrievers would add to the lead after a perfect throw-in by sophomore Kevin Mezzadra (Fallston, Md./Loyola-Blakefield) gave Cucchiella his second goal of the day, scored on a header past Maine keeper Chad Mongeon.
The Black Bears' lone goal came less than a minute later, at 59:39, when senior Justin Stockford got control of the ball, and shot it into the lower left corner of the net past Retriever goalieAndy Marchica (Silver Spring, Md./Paint Branch).
For the game, UMBC outshot the Black Bears, 13-10, but Maine had an advantage on corner kicks, 7-2. Both Marchica and Mongeon made two saves for their respective teams.
The UMBC men's soccer team returns to action on Wednesday, when they travel to Binghamton for an America East contest at 3 p.m.
