The men's soccer team came within 28 seconds of a road victory, but a late Navy shot deflected in off a UMBC defender, and the two teams played to a 2-2 double overtime tie in Annapolis, Maryland.
Navy opened the scoring in the 28th minute of play, but reserve midfielder David Feazell got the game-tying goal in the 42nd minute, converting a feed from Matt McGowan. UMBC grabbed a 2-1 lead in the 48th minute, as Steve Goddard knocked in the rebound of a shot by Powell Cucchiella. Cucchiella recorded his team-high seventh assist of the year.
UMBC pounded the Navy goal with 21 shots, and Mids netminder came up with 12 saves in the game. Freshman netminder Josh Osit got his first collegiate start and made 7 saves for UMBC, in a game which featured 40 shots.
The Retrievers get back to conference action on Saturday when they host Maine.
